Keep Your Pet’s Smile Sparkling: 7 Tips for Pet Dental Health
Just like humans, our pets need regular dental care to keep their smiles healthy and bright!
Dental health plays a critical role in your pet’s overall well-being. The mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body, and neglecting it can lead to serious health issues, including gum disease, tooth loss, pain, and even systemic illness.
We’ve all experienced that unmistakable “pet breath,” whether it’s a smelly morning kiss from your dog or your cat yawning in your face. While many pet parents assume bad breath is just part of having a furry friend, it’s actually a sign that something may be wrong.
Fortunately, keeping your pet’s teeth clean doesn’t have to be a chore. With a few simple habits, you can help prevent dental disease and ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles.
7 Tips for Caring for Your Dog’s Teeth
1. Brush Their Teeth Regularly - One of the most effective ways to support your dog’s dental health is regular brushing. Brushing removes food particles, bacteria, and plaque before it hardens into tartar. Plaque can calcify in as little as 48 hours, so aim to brush daily or every other day.
Helpful tips:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or finger brush designed for pets.
Choose pet-safe toothpaste with tasty flavors like chicken, beef, or peanut butter.
Make it fun! Start slow and reward your pet with praise and treats.
Focus on the gum line and outer surfaces where plaque builds up most.
(Bonus: These tips work for cats, too, just use a brush designed for feline mouths!)
2. Schedule Professional Dental Cleanings - While brushing at home is important, it doesn’t replace a professional dental cleaning. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends a full dental cleaning by age 1 for small and medium dogs, and by age 2 for larger breeds. For cats, it’s recommended annually.
Veterinary dental cleanings include:
Complete oral exams under anesthesia
Cleaning above and below the gum line
Polishing, extractions (if necessary), and treatment of any issues

3. Use Dental Chews
Dental chews are a tasty way to support oral hygiene by scraping away plaque, especially on back teeth. Just be sure to:
Look for chews with the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal
Choose the right size for your pet
Always supervise chewing and replace worn-out toys
4. Try Water Additives - Water additives are an easy, no-fuss way to help freshen your pet’s breath and fight bacteria. Just add to your pet’s water bowl, no brushing required!
5. Offer Dental Toys - Chewing on dental toys helps reduce plaque and tartar while keeping your pup entertained. These toys are especially helpful for reaching the back teeth, where brushing can be tricky.
6. Use Dental Wipes - If your pet isn’t quite ready for a toothbrush, dental wipes are a great stepping stone. They’re convenient, disposable, and help wipe away surface buildup.
7. Ask Your Vet About Dental Food & Additives - Prescription dental diets can help reduce plaque, stains, and tartar buildup. Food additives, which are sprinkled over your dog’s meals, contain enzymes and nutrients that promote oral health. Ask your vet what’s best for your pet.
