June is National Pet Preparedness Month: Is Your Pet Ready?
When disaster strikes, your pets rely on you more than ever. June is National Pet Preparedness Month, a time to make sure your furry family members are included in your emergency planning.
From power outages to evacuations, being prepared can save lives, and not just your own. Emergency situations can happen unexpectedly, but a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your pets safe and sound!
Here are a few essential steps to help you plan ahead and protect your pets when emergencies arise:
Top 5 Tips for Pet Emergency Prep
1. Make a Pet Emergency Plan - Know how you’ll evacuate, where you’ll go, and how you’ll transport your pets. Talk to family, friends, or neighbors who may be able to help care for your pets if you're unable to do so.
2. Pack a Pet Disaster Kit - Prepare a go-bag with food, water, medications, a first-aid kit, and comforting items like toys or blankets.
3. Keep Veterinary Records Handy - Store vaccination records, medication lists, and your vet’s contact info in a waterproof folder, or keep digital copies on your phone.
4. Microchip Your Pets - Microchipping can be a lifesaver during an emergency. Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and your contact information is up to date. Need to schedule a microchipping appointment? Call the Bredel Clinic at 301.387.7729.
5. Post a Pet Alert Sticker - Place a pet alert sticker on your windows to let emergency responders know there are animals inside your home.
What to Include in a Pet Emergency Kit
Your pet’s emergency kit should have enough supplies to last at least 3 days and include the following:
Food, Water & Medications - Bring enough for several days, plus bowls and a can opener if needed.
First Aid Supplies - Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any special medical supplies your pet needs.
Leashes, Harnesses & Carriers - Sturdy leashes and carriers are essential for safe transport. If space allows, bring your pet’s bed too.
Identification & Records - Keep ID tags, microchip info, and a recent photo of your pet handy. Write down feeding schedules, medical conditions, and vet contact info.
Comfort Items - A favorite toy, blanket, or familiar bedding can help reduce stress in unfamiliar situations.
A Selfie with Your Pet - A recent photo of you with your pet can help prevent mix-ups or mistaken identity.
