Home Sweet Home: Keeping Your Pets Safe this Summer

Summer fun often means open windows, backyard BBQs, and family vacations, but it also comes with an increased risk of pets going missing. That’s why July is recognized as National Lost Pet Prevention Month, a timely reminder to take a few simple steps to help keep your pets safe and sound.

During the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, animal shelters across the country see a spike in lost pets. Loud fireworks and busy gatherings can easily startle dogs and cats, prompting them to run away out of fear. Sadly, many of these pets don’t find their way home. In fact, only 17% of lost dogs and less than 3% of lost cats in shelters are reunited with their families.

At HART, we want to help change those numbers. Here are a few key tips to protect your pets this summer and beyond:

8 Easy Ways to Prevent Your Pet from Getting Lost

  1. Never leave pets unattended - Even well-behaved pets can panic and flee when left alone. Always supervise your pet, especially when outside or in unfamiliar environments.

  2. Microchip your pet - A microchip is a quick, permanent way to increase the chances of a reunion if your pet ever gets lost. Shelters and vets can scan the chip to find your contact info.

  3. Use collars and ID tags - Make sure your pet wears a collar with an up-to-date ID tag that includes your phone number. It’s one of the fastest ways to bring a lost pet home.

  4. Secure your yard - If your pet spends time outside, check that your fence is secure and escape-proof. Fix gaps, reinforce the base to prevent digging, and ensure it’s tall enough to prevent jumping.

  5. Leash up - Always use a leash for walks or outdoor adventures, especially in new places. Even confident pets can get spooked and bolt.

  6. Include pets in your emergency plan - Natural disasters and travel disruptions can happen. Make sure you have a plan for your pets, too.

  7. Choose safe pet care while you're away - Heading out of town? Give yourself peace of mind by boarding your pet at our Bed ‘n Bark Inn pet hotel.
