Create a Pet-Safe Haven: Toxic & Pet-Friendly Plants to Know
Spring is in full bloom, and it’s the perfect time to freshen up your home and garden. But as you're planting flowers or adding greenery indoors, don’t forget to consider your four-legged family members. Some of the most common plants can be toxic—or even deadly—to cats and dogs.
At HART for Animals, we know how curious our pets can be. They love to sniff, chew, and explore—sometimes in places they shouldn’t. While some mischief leads to nothing more than muddy paws, other times it can pose a serious health risk. In fact, in 2024, the Animal Poison Control Center responded to over 451,000 cases involving pets and toxic substances—many of which involved common plants. That’s a 4% increase from previous years!
What Happens If Your Pet Eats a Toxic Plant?
Some toxic plants may only cause mild stomach upset, but others can result in more serious issues like vomiting, seizures, or even organ failure. The tricky part? Many of the most dangerous plants—like lilies, sago palms, or philodendrons—are popular in homes and gardens.
If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic plant, call one of the following emergency hotlines right away:
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: 888-426-4435
Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661
Both are available 24/7, 365 days a year. Check out the picture below for a list of the 20 most toxic plants for pets.
