Adoption Story: Ludo

Ludo was adopted in December of 2021. While we aren't sure of his breed, Dr. Jessy, our vet, believes him to be a Karakachan, which is a type of dog bred for helping with livestock. Ludo fits right in protecting the farm animals at his new home. He was chicken-challenged at first, but that was resolved with a larger pen for the chickens so they and Ludo can safely get used to each other. With spring chicks on the way, hopefully, Ludo will see them as something to protect as he watches them grow. And Ludo has proven to be their protector, chasing away a peregrine falcon that was trying to swoop into the pen to get at the chickens. Every time the falcon comes near the farm, Ludo makes sure he knows he's not welcome. Ludo's best friend is Red, the pony, and loves to give him kisses before Ludo heads off for walks with his dad.

“We are working on car riding still but got great advice from you behaviorist. I just love having that resource. He is very smart but an independent thinker, and thankfully wants to please. He is doing a bit of testing with Doug right now. We say he has entered the teenage years. Even though he has lots of free time to roam the property, one of us but more often Doug, takes him for long walks around the fields with harness and leash, which he loves. But he has to sit to get his harness on. He has begun not sitting for Doug even as he is excited about the prospect of a walk. But just to emphasize his battle of wills with Doug, he will come over to me and sit, then look over at Doug, as if to say 'See, I will listen for her.' Just a little bump in the road. Even though it is incredibly cute, we are not letting him get away with it!” says Debbie.

Ludo seems to have found his forever home and is a perfect fit on the farm and comfortable at home in the evenings. Debbie explains. "As with the past rescue dogs we have had, we wonder why anyone would give him up. We are particularly impressed with how he interacts with visitors. We had a neighbor over for dinner. Ludo was happy to see him and gave a friendly greeting for perhaps a minute or less, then went about his life, not interested in any more attention than that. I like that about him, friendly but not demanding, staying close by but not needing attention. My 14-year-old grandson will be coming for the summer to help out on the farm. I can't wait for him to meet Ludo. He is going to love him!"
