Paws & Presents: Toy Safety for Pets
With the holidays officially here, December is also recognized as Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and that includes our pets! As we wrap up gifts for the people we love, it’s the perfect time to think carefully about what we’re giving our furry family members, too. Choosing durable, non-toxic toys and keeping an eye out for stray items around the house helps ensure the season stays merry and safe for everyone.
Here are some helpful pet toy and gift safety tips to keep in mind this holiday season and beyond:
Choose the Right Size: Pets play differently based on their size and breed. A toy that’s perfect for a big dog may be unsafe for a small cat or kitten.
Avoid Small Parts: Skip toys with buttons, bells, or tiny pieces that can be chewed off and swallowed.
Look for Durable, Pet-Safe Materials: Opt for sturdy rubber or tough fabrics, especially for heavy chewers. Check that toys are labeled non-toxic and free of harmful chemicals.
Skip Strings and Ribbons: Loose strands can cause dangerous intestinal blockages if ingested.
Watch the Toy’s Size: Make sure toys are large enough that your pet can’t swallow them whole.
Think About Age: Puppies, kittens, adults, and seniors all have different play needs. Pick toys that match your pet’s age and activity level.
Supervise New Toys: Keep an eye on your pet during play, especially when introducing something new.
Rotate Toys: Swapping toys in and out helps prevent boredom and reduces wear and tear on any single item.
Gifting toys is a wonderful way to bond with your pets and enrich their lives! Just a little awareness goes a long way in keeping them safe and happy this holiday season, and beyond.
