October is National Pet Wellness Month!
Every October, National Pet Wellness Month reminds us to slow down and focus on the health and well-being of our beloved pets. Just like us, our furry companions rely on good nutrition, preventive care, and regular checkups to live long, happy, and healthy lives. At HART for Animals, we believe wellness is more than just treating illness, it’s about creating the best possible quality of life for our pets at every stage.
The purpose of Pet Wellness Month is to:
Encourage regular veterinary checkups and screenings for early detection of health concerns.
Promote healthy habits such as proper nutrition, daily exercise, and routine vaccinations.
Raise awareness about responsible pet care, including spaying/neutering, microchipping, and adopting from shelters and rescues.
Why Pet Wellness Matters
Making wellness a priority has benefits for both pets and people:
Early detection and prevention of health problems saves lives.
Improved quality of life keeps pets more active, comfortable, and playful.
Creates stronger bonds between pets and their families, built on care and trust.
Lowers long-term veterinary costs, since prevention is often far less expensive than emergency treatment.
Think of it this way: preventive care is like building a strong foundation for a home. It may take some time and investment upfront, but it keeps everything stronger and safer in the long run.
How to Celebrate Pet Wellness Month
1. Schedule Your Pet’s Wellness Exam
Just like humans, pets should see a doctor regularly, not just when something seems wrong. At HART’s Bredel Veterinary Clinic, we recommend at least one nose-to-tail wellness exam every year (and sometimes more for senior pets or pets with chronic conditions).
During these visits, our skilled and caring team checks:
Vaccination status and updates
Dental health and hygiene
Weight, diet, and exercise needs
Age-specific health risks
Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention
Wellness exams are just $45 at HART!
And here’s something extra special: when you book an appointment with us, you’re not just caring for your own pet, you’re also helping others. Proceeds from our clinic support HART’s mission to rescue, shelter, and adopt homeless animals. It’s a beautiful way to give back while keeping your best friend healthy.
Call the HART Animal Center at 301.387.7729 to schedule your pet’s exam today!
2. Stay on Top of Vaccinations and Parasite Control
Diseases like parvo, distemper, and rabies are preventable, but only if pets are vaccinated. Parasites like fleas, ticks, and heartworms can also cause serious problems if left unchecked.

3. Focus on Nutrition and Exercise
A healthy pet is an active pet! Just like us, pets need balanced meals and regular exercise to stay fit. Extra weight can lead to joint problems, diabetes, and other serious health issues. Daily walks, play sessions, and interactive toys are fun ways to keep your furry friend active and engaged.
4. Plan Ahead with Pet Insurance or an Emergency Fund
Veterinary care can be costly, especially during unexpected emergencies. Having a financial safety net, whether through pet insurance or an emergency savings fund, can ensure you never have to make a difficult choice when your pet needs care the most.
5. Enjoy Pet-Friendly Activities
Wellness is about joy, too! Regular walks, playtime, and grooming sessions aren’t just fun, they keep pets physically active and mentally stimulated. If you’d like to share that joy, join our volunteer team and spend time walking our adoptable pups or socializing our adoptable cats. You’ll brighten their day (and yours, too!).
6. Support Shelters and Rescues
Not every pet is lucky enough to have a loving family. By supporting organizations like HART, you help us provide life-saving medical care, food, shelter, and second chances for homeless pets.

This October, take time to celebrate National Pet Wellness Month by giving your furry family members the gift of good health. Whether it’s scheduling that annual exam, refreshing their vaccines, adding an extra walk to your daily routine, or donating to help pets in need, every small step adds up to a happier, healthier life for our four-legged friends!
