Keeping the “Treats” Without the Trouble: Understanding Pet Obesity

October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to give your furry friends a little extra love and attention, especially when it comes to their weight!

Just like people, pets can struggle with obesity, which can lead to serious health problems and impact their quality of life. In this blog, we’ll cover the causes of pet obesity, the health risks involved, and some helpful tips to keep your four-legged family members happy, fit, and healthy!

Understanding Pet Obesity

In the United States, pet obesity is a growing concern, affecting an estimated 56% of dogs and 60% of cats. While those round bellies and chubby cheeks might look cute, carrying extra weight can have serious consequences for your pet’s health and longevity.

What Is Pet Obesity?

Pet obesity occurs when a pet consumes more calories than they burn, leading to excess fat accumulation. Several factors can contribute to this, including overfeeding, lack of exercise, age, and even genetics.

Why Does It Matter?

You might be thinking, “So what if my dog has a little extra fluff?” While it might seem harmless, obesity can increase your pet’s risk of:

  • Diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • Arthritis and joint problems

  • Certain types of cancer

It can also affect your pet’s energy levels, make playtime less enjoyable, and even limit their ability to go on walks or jump onto the couch for cuddles.

Signs of Obesity in Pets

Here are a few signs your pet may be overweight:

  • You can’t easily feel their ribs. You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs without a thick layer of fat covering them.

  • Their waistline has disappeared. When viewed from above, a healthy pet should have a visible waist.

  • They’re less active. Reduced mobility, reluctance to play, or difficulty getting up can all be warning signs.

Tips for Preventing and Managing Pet Obesity

If your furry friend is carrying a few extra pounds, don’t worry! With a few lifestyle changes, you can help them get back on track.

  1. Practice Portion Control - Measure your pet’s food according to package directions or your veterinarian’s recommendations. It’s easy to overfeed without realizing it!

  2. Choose Healthy Treats - Treats are a great way to show love, but moderation is key. Try using healthy alternatives like carrots, green beans, or low-calorie treats.

  3. Make Exercise Fun - Aim for at least 30 minutes of daily activity. Go for walks, play fetch, or try interactive toys to keep your pet moving and engaged.

  4. Schedule Regular Vet Checkups - Routine checkups help track your pet’s weight and overall health. Your vet can also provide a nutrition and exercise plan tailored to your pet’s needs. Call the HART Animal Center at 301.387.7729 to schedule your pet’s wellness exam!
